Life began on the street in an abandoned house. As part of a feral colony, the day revolved around foraging for food, dodging cars, dogs and mean-spirited humans. We took cover under the house at night. It wasn’t much of a life, but at least, we were all still alive, thanks to our protective mom. Then one evening with no warning, the house burst into flames. We watched as it burned to the ground—taking with it our only source of shelter. For days, we huddled on the curb in front of the house, not knowing where to go, until a lady showed up with traps. We were so hungry we didn’t resist. And besides, we had no choice. We were all carried far away to the SpayMart sanctuary. Although everyone was kind, there was plenty to eat, it was a huge adjustment to shelter life as opposed to the street. I will never forget my other life but accept that safety and well being have a price. I am learning to trust that special person to make it all happen for me.
