Cookie is a sweet cat who loves everyone! She is calm and gentle and purrs constantly! Cookie was living on the property of a school in the New Orleans area, where she had a litter of kittens. All of the kittens were adopted and a family decided to adopt Cookie. Cookie was vaccinated and fixed and unfortunately tested positive for FIV, and immune disease. The family backed out of the adoption and the school will not allow Cookie back on the property. Cookie is fully vaccinated, perfectly healthy and super sweet.

I would like to begin by thanking everyone who contributed to SpayMart’s Felicity Charity Fund to cover Maxwell’s medical expenses. Emails came in daily, while many of you stopped by the thrift store with donations and inquiries about his progress and well-being. This outpouring of generosity and concern was truly overwhelming.
I am so happy to report he is doing fantastic and his unsinkable spirit has not been dampened in the least bit. Stitches were removed yesterday and his progress report was all green lights. The only thing he lacks now is a wonderful home with the love and attention he deserves.The reality is that without your generosity and continued support of the Felicity Charity Fund, wonderful animals like Maxwell would be denied life-saving assistance. It is because of your compassion that he is well on his way to a bright and healthy future. You made the difference.

Simon’s life started off like so many excited first time owners.  He was IT – neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, etc.  But the thrill didn’t last too long.  After graduation, his owner adopted a dog and moved out of town.  Simon was left behind with a boyfriend who fed a number of outside cats, and Simon was obliged to join in.  The boyfriend’s work demanded long absences from home and Simon soon realized he had to fend for himself.  This often involved roaming the streets in search of food.  A man felt sorry for Simon and called SpayMart in hopes that he could be rescued and re-homed.  He is only 2-3  years old, with a sleek, shiny coat.  His personality in engaging, and he is quite a talker.  He is a great cat and is looking for stability, not excitement, the second time around.

Mazie is a beautiful calico about 5 years old. She lived with 2 other cats, one of them being her closest pal. Their owner loved all three very much and provided the best home she possibly could until she lost her home in foreclosure. She tried desperately to hang on, for her sake and the cats, but it was inevitable. Down-sizing was a difficult time, and all she could afford was a very tiny apartment, that didn’t allow pets. After dealing with her sorrow, she began making phone calls to place her cats. When a friend told her about SpayMart, it was her last hope. She dreaded taking them to the shelter, and was elated when the organization agreed to accept the cats. However, as she was loading them up for the transport to the sanctuary, Mazie’s best buddy panicked and managed to escape from his carrier, disappearing from sight. Attempts were made to rescue him, but sadly, he was never seen again. So, Mazie arrived at SpayMart without an owner and without her best friend.  She has an unsinkable spirit and will be a ray of sunshine to any home.

Gato is a large, silky short haired girl of about nine.   She loved her person and didn’t understand why she didn’t get to stay with him when he got engaged to someone who couldn’t have cats.   She is adjusting and hoping to find a new home as nice as the one she had.   She enjoys exploring and then curling up in her bed.  Gato is somewhat  shy and confused with all the major changes in her life and would do best in a quiet environment with no children or dogs; preferably one person.

Mr. B is a big gentle boy, front DECLAWED, and completely full of love. He is quite handsome too, with beautiful crystal blue eyes. Mr. Bs first owner was quite elderly. They had 2 or 3 happy years together before he passed away leaving Mr. B homeless. He had nowhere to go but a local shelter. Being so gentle and laid back, the shelter decided to feature Mr. B as the cat of the week, and of course, in no time at all, he had a second chance at love.

His second family was perfect! With an 8 year old son, Mr. B got all the love and attention he deserved. But once again his happiness was short lived.   Mr. B enjoys brushing and belly rubs! He is looking for a family to love him forever.

VELVET is a true love. She is beautiful too, with long silky fur! And Velvet is a polydactyl! Velvet adores people and attention. Velvet’s owner was a very dear friend of SpayMart who passed away last Spring. Shortly thereafter Velvet’s brother, Danny, had to be euthanized due to bone cancer. The number of feral cats in this country is in the millions. Animal welfare organizations in every region battle with the grim realities of thousands of kittens born every year to feral cats, exponentially increasing an uncontrolled population. SpayMart’s Neuter Scooter Campaign is an effort to educate the public regarding these cats and raise public awareness. Promoting Trap, Neuter, and Return, this program attempts to control feral cat populations into manageable colonies and is recognized as the most effective and humane method of controlling the numbers. Realizing that feral cats comprise the largest segment of ANY animal euthanized at area shelters, AND that the city of New Orleans has one of the largest feral cat populations in the United States, estimated at between 350,000 to 400,000, aggressive strategies must be available to the public if euthanasia rates are ever to be lowered.

Smoky Joe apparently had a family at some point of his life, but that was long ago. Street life took a big toll on his health and by the time he ended up at the Sanctuary, he had almost given up. In his desperate search for food, water and shelter, he wandered into a stranger’s yard hoping to be accepted. However, his wish was not granted. The woman ‘s idea of help was to bring him to Petco in hopes of finding a home and clearing herself of all responsibility. Although she promised to pick him up at the close of the day in the event he was not adopted, it wasn’t surprising she never returned. Smokey has blossomed into a healthy, adorable cat and has so much to offer, he rightfully refuses to ever be rejected again

David lived the first part of his life at the SpayMart sanctuary.  After several years he and his best friend, Snowball, went home with a  member of the SpayMart staff.  For the very first time, he experienced warm laps by the fireside,  endless nights watching TV on his special blanket, and best of all, cuddling in bed with the person he loved best.  Due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, David and Snowball were returned to the sanctuary.  Although he is 10 years old, David is a healthy, adoptable cat.  He never meets a stranger, is wonderfully good natured and would love to recreate golden memories when he was somebody’s special little boy.

Snowball spent most of his early years at the SpayMart Sanctuary.  Then, magically, a staff member who cared for him and his best friend, David, decided to adopt both.  He adored the one on one attention, definitely approved of canned treats every night, and sleeping in bed with his new person.  Due to personal constraints, beyond anyone’s control, both Snowball and David were returned to the SpayMart sanctuary, where it all began.  He is healthy, handsome and ever so gentle, and doesn’t want to waste time here.  He is far too special for that.

Tiger is a happy-go-lucky orange tabby fellow with an artsy white smock; he’s something of a pushover for anybody who’ll give him a pet and a kind word.  In fact, he’s SO affable, that he still can’t understand how on earth he ended up unwanted, uncared for and left to die at a pound! A last minute reprieve from the kind folks at Spaymart spared him, and though he’s awfully grateful for the foster care all these years, it seems to him that it’s lasted a bit too long…Tiger is four years old now, and he’s waited at the shelter for most of his life, but no one has ever chosen him. He has all the ingredients for a match made in heaven —he’s an awesome guy with short hair (almost shedless); he’s terribly good-natured, and he is absolutely committed to a long-term relationship.  What’s there not to love?????

Just as her name implies, this adorable, petite female is the true definition of a “Southern Bell”. Reserved just enough, impeccable manners (refuses to eat with the rest of the herd as they are truly beneath her). Tries to overlook the bad manner and behavior of those she is forced to associate with. And through it all, no one at the shelter has explained to her she was actually born in a trailer park. Her family cared very much for her but Bell had a dislocated hip and required expensive surgery to correct. It involved a two part operation and considerable time to heal. She is now completely recovered and is looking for an indoor home. She is beautiful, fun to watch, captivating, in short, you’ll love her as much as we do.

Maybe it isn’t cool to call a handsome guy “beautiful,” but THIS one could only be called “Beau.”  He has the deep wisdom of the East in his eyes, too.  Beau is a shorthaired cat.  Stranded in Picayune, he was finally trapped by a Spaymart volunteer. 

Everyone who meets this precious fellow says Beau is a genuine sweetheart.  The hardships of his former life have left him a little shy with strangers at first. He might do his very best as the only cat in a household, or at least in one with just a very few pets, where he could get unlimited love and understanding.  Given those simple things, he will love back with all his heart.

Brendle is a gentle, sweet lady who likes living the quiet life. She loves people and getting pet, and would love a nice lap to rest on. She has a beautiful tabby coat with splashes of orange!

Brendle’s owner was quite young when she died unexpectedly, leaving 23 cats to fend for themselves. Some were given to friends, others released at barns, but Brendle and several others had no place to go. When SpayMart heard of the circumstances, the cats were brought to the shelter. Being older, placement has been difficult and she has been waiting 3 years to steal someone’s heart. Brendle likes a low key environment with no dogs or kids.

Six or so years ago I was born on the streets and I lived there with a lot of other cats.  It was very hard to survive, but I learned how to do it with a little help from my buddies out there.  Some of them didn’t make it, but I hung on.  Kind people noticed us and thank goodness, called SpayMart to help us out.  That’s how I got here and I’m very grateful, too.  The SpayMart people are
so nice to us and they worry, too, when we don’t find the good homes we’re supposed to.

Betty is a super sweet, people-loving cat who curls up next to you for an even closer pet. She’s such a gentle love and craves attention. She has perfect manners, too. She really knows how to be a good companion and theres not an ounce of negativity in her nature. The glass is ALWAYS full, in her mind.

Betty’s story:

A few years ago I lived with such a nice lady. Even though she didn’t have much in the way of worldly goods (We lived in the Projects), she really, really loved me and all the other cats she cared for and we loved her right back. We were living the best life anybody could ever hope for because of all that love.

One dark night, a huge storm hit our neighborhood. It destroyed everything for us. My lady was rushed away and she left me behind. I KNOW she didn’t want to. I begged her to take me, but everything was in such confusion and before I knew it, she disappeared! I still couldn’t believe it. I waited and waited with all the other cats and we carried on as best we could. It was so dark and so cold and so wet everywhere, but we stuck together, all for one and one for all. We were SO hungry.

So many dark days and nights went by. Sometimes, strange people came along and gave us something to eat. I was so very glad for good people like that, even though I wondered why they just left us again in the bad outdoors. I even cried out and asked them to please, please take us home with them where there was safety, warmth and light. It was so scary on the streets, but we used to huddle in a bunch to stop shivering and we’d share memories of our lady and our good life and we’d plan how we’d welcome her when she came back to us. Love kept us going.

She never did come back. She was very elderly and maybe she made it to a new home where we couldn’t go? We still love her.

Weeks passed before some cat rescuers came our way. We didn’t know they were rescuers because they looked pretty scary, carrying funny looking boxes and trying to stuff us into them, and a lot of my friends started screaming and running in all directions. But you know what? Those rescuers didn’t terrify me at all. I love new adventures and besides, I was SO relieved to smell food and hear kind human voices again. I just LOVE people and always give them a chance to prove themselves. So I just flew into a box and hoped for the best.

The best happened too. The box was a special delivery to Spaymart and there I saw the protection, warmth, and light I’d been dreaming about. Good food and toys, too. But even though the good people there have given me lots and lots of loving care, I still dream of a special guardian. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful. I just wish with all my heart that I could love somebody in a real home again. I’m eight years old now, but I still have SO much love to give.

In writing Trixie’s biography I am left feeling awkward and inadequate. Trixie belonged to a very good friend of mind and an animal advocate, Linda Graf. For many years now, Spaymart has been blessed to have such a talented writer as Linda, spin her magic around each cats personal story in an effort to find just the right home. Her sudden death has left us all saddened and shocked. Had she known her fate, I’m quite sure she would have written three master pieces for her three beloved cats. However, not knowing the seriousness of her illness, I am left struggling to fill her shoes and will try my best not to disappoint her. Trixie was born sometime in 2005 and is a Katrina cat that was fortunate enough to end up in Linda Graf’s home, with two much older cats, Danny and Velvet. Linda worked to do her part for the animals left behind following hurricane Katrina and adopted Trixie, an adorable domestic short hair white cat with black spots.

According to notes Linda jotted down for me on April 29, 2011, just 6 days before her death. Trixie’s favorite pastime was watching the birds from a window sill in Linda’s dining room. I was also told she loves stick toy playtime so much she gets completely carried away and may scratch if you try to retreat before she’s done. I consider it a privilege to care for such an extraordinary woman’s treasures. It is the least we can do in view of her lifetime committed to improving the lives of animals everywhere she could. My goal is to find a home that will ease Trixie’s loss. Linda’s touch can never be replaced, but I’m sure that the right someone can love Trixie just as much and enjoy her for many years to come, just as Linda did.

This handsome boy has deserved better for most of his life. He was abandoned as an adolescent by his owners and left to die in an apartment. The cleaning crew fortunately found him before it was too late and notified management. Charlie has never understood why his family deserted him. Sure, he liked racing through the house with whatever he could find that resembled cat toys, but he never climbed the drapes or scratched the furniture. He’s also wondering why he’s been in a shelter for 5 years. We have promised him this is his lucky year to meet a real family that will love him for the wonderful cat he is.

A very nice lady rescued a tiny ball of fluff shortly after he came into this world behind her apartment building.  “Chester” the orange tabby lived the really good life with her for four whole years.  He had a princely collection of toys and his very own furniture (which he kindly shared with eleven other orphaned kitties).  Sometimes, though, life hurts and it certainly started smarting for Chester and his brethren one day.  His guardian was suddenly going to have a baby of her own!  There was no longer room for her beloved cat menagerie so sadly, she did the only thing she knew how to do …she called the perilous Pound.  Luckily, though, the Spaymart team heard about that and agreed to take the displaced kitties in. 

 The 12 little royals were suddenly refugees!  As nice a sanctuary as Spaymart is, it was no substitute for the rich life of constant love and comfort these cats had known for such a long time.  Chester, though, took it like a man.

 Chester’s heart is still full of hope for an honest-to-goodness home of his own—IF a loving person or family comes with it.  He is a total people-person, a real extrovert who LOVES to chat all the time.  Such a conversationalist!!!!  This little sweetie will never stop amusing the fortunate party who adopts him.  And he’s as loving as a valentine.

You’ve heard the old saying “Live on Love” (with a little help from friends)? Well, that about sums it up for all 27 of us. We lived in a housing project and belonged to an elderly woman on a fixed income. She loved us even though money was very scarce. We were all neutered by SpayMart, and often times food and litter had to be subsidized. It was all working out until Katrina. Our owner evacuated but couldn’t take any of us with her. Someone fortunately opened the front door shortly after the storm and this at least allowed us to forage for food. It was very difficult until SpayMart heard our plight and rescued us. We all are cared for now, but remember the love and attention we got at home. I’ll never stop believing I can find another home with even more love.

Chevy belonged to a family as a small kitten and young adolescent. She lived in an apartment and wasn’t allowed outside. Her owners left for work early each morning but faithfully returned in the evening and spent time playing with her. Chevy looked forward to this time, her time with her family. Until one evening, she waited and waited, but no one came. After hours and hours of waiting, she gave up and went to nap. The next day, she amused herself as usual, anticipating their return in the evening. But again, no one showed. Her food was gone, and her only water supply was the toilet. The following day, she spent most of her time in the window, watching and hoping. Fortunately a neighbor, who knew the apartment had been vacated, noticed Chevy and reported it to management. SpayMart was contacted and little Chevy has been sheltered for almost 6 years—she runs to greet you, rubs against your legs, begs to be petted, purrs affectionately, and clearly does not belong in a shelter. Please consider making her part of your family—only this time; please make it a forever family.

Darla is candy to the eyes–like a true Maine Coon! She’s only about 6 years old and t took some time for her to emerge after the neglect she endured. Darla lived for many years in the home of a hoarder with over 100 other cats. Shes known hunger, disease and hopelessness, as she watched the weaker cats die from the harsh conditions they were forced to endure. SpayMart rescued them all and brought them to live at the sanctuary. Fresh food and water, clean bedding, kind words, and lots of human contact were so new! Darla and her friends began a transformation, physically as well as psychologically. Dull eyes became bright, matted coats became silky, suspicion became trust, and lethargy became playfulness. The transformation was amazing to watch. And Darla was no exception. Her frame filled out and her coat grew long and luxuriously. She turned into a true beauty inside and out. Now the time is right for her to leave the sanctuary and start a new beginning and new life of her own. She’d like to share it with someone special because she’s special.

Hello, I have a senior cat that is in need of surgery. I’ve been searching for a while to find Someone who is willing to take her and absorb the costs of her medical care and possibly adopt her to give her the home she needs. She is getting older, and I just don’t have the money to take care of her. Your group was suggested to me as a place that might be able to cover the surgery. Please let me know if you can help. Mackenzie has a lump on her underside that hasn’t been diagnosed (the vet said it could be either a fatty deposit or breast cancer, but the xray to  Determine that would be $300).The lump has since started to bleed. It doesn’t bleed all the time, but sometimes I come home from work and find blood stains everywhere. Anything Mackenzie lays on usually gets something on it. I try to clean it every day and apply some first aid ointment to keep it from getting infected, but I’m just at a loss anymore. She doesn’t seem to be in pain (she’s eating and drinking fine, and acting normal), but I know something has to change, and I just can’t afford even a vet visit. She has had the tumor removed. The Vet confirmed that it was malignant mammary tumor, the surgery went well. The surgery did buy her some time since it was removed. She isn’t in any pain, and enjoys play time with her best bud Preston.

Daisy is declawed.  Adopted by a loving family with an eight year old son, Daisy is a sweet girl.  She knows all about the good life.   But on one ill-fated night, her world would never be the same.

The only thing she remembers is terrifying shots ringing though the house and desperately looking for a place to hide.  And then, everything was silenced.   Days passed and  after two weeks of silence and  no food, water or contact, she realized her owner was never coming back and she was left to starve to death.

A neighbor convinced law officials to enter the house and rescue 4 of the 8 cats that survived. Daisy was one of the four who somehow made it.  She is lonely and misses her family, but is hoping someone out there will hear her story, who is searching for an adorable tabby cat.  And maybe they’ll have the perfect window sill to go with his perfect home.

Fox was rescued as part of a cruelty case, living with 100 other cats in just one room, at the home of a hoarder. He was hungry and cold for most of his young life, only to spend the next years at the SpayMart shelter. He never complains and is so grateful for the second chance SpayMart is giving him. He is quite a character, with a perky personality and rarely meets a stranger he doesn’t adore. He likes playing around with his buddies, but dreams of leaving the shelter for his very own home with his very own guardian. He is very playful and funny and works at amusing you. Hudson is a gorgeous little girl. She’s a silky beauty with a stunning black mark on her smooth white fur.  Born as part of a feral colony in mid-city of New Orleans. Hudson’s feral mom was worried about where she could give birth to her upcoming family. After carefully considering several opportunities, she opted for an outside laundry room that was dark & quiet most of the time. Behind the dryer was the final decision. All went well for mom and there was a small hole in the back wall just enough for her to come and go in search of food but not big enough to allow intruders. All was well until the little family began moving around and vocalizing. The woman who owned the house quickly caught on and agreed to allow mom to stay after sterilizing her, but babies had to go. SpayMart took all 3 kittens, Hudson, and her 2 black sisters. Every one found homes but Hudson. She’s a little quiet at first, and warms up in a hurry. She’s fine with other cats and would love to trade the shelter for a forever home.

Juliette is one of the sweetest ladies we’ve come across! And if Juliette could talk, you’d know why. She and 14 other cats weathered Katrina in a pen in back of her house. It must have been a night to remember. If it hadn’t been for a kind neighbor who brought them water and scraps of food, they would have all perished. It was weeks before the owner called to report she would not be returning to New Orleans and would someone check on the cats. She wasn’t sure if they were still alive. SpayMart found the house and provided safe haven to all. Juliette has been sheltered now for almost 6 years and has become absolutely beautiful inside and out. She loves to sit with her back against the pen and watch the others. She knows her time for a home is running out but is hopeful there is someone out there waiting just for her.
