Kitten Foster Program
The kitten Foster Program was created as an adjunct to the adoption program in an effort to increase adoptions and reduce the homeless animal population by giving the public a proactive solution for dealing with homeless kittens, other than relinquishing them to animal control. The core mission of SpayMart is and always has been to reduce euthanasia rates at local animal control facilities, and homeless kittens represent a piece of the puzzle if we are to solve pet-overpopulation. By providing a program for kittens, we are proactively preventing years of breeding by sterilizing these animals before their first heat cycle. Participants from the public agree to foster kittens until old enough for adoption. Prior to homing, all kittens are sterilized, vaccinated, micro-chipped, and treated for parasites. To qualify, kittens must be free-roaming and no more than 4 months of age. Vetting services are offered to the public at drastically reduced prices by participating veterinarians. The program is based on a voucher system that must be accessed through program coordinators. Adoption opportunities are offered to participants through high-traffic Petsmart and Petco stores who have partnered with SpayMart, or participants may access the program to take advantage of discounted services and secure their own homes. Last year alone the program facilitated 275 kitten adoptions.
