Spaymart Sanctuary Improvement Fund – Donations Desperately Needed

Sanctuary-1

Dear Spaymart Supporters,

It’s hard to believe that 18 years have passed since SpayMart incorporated and set about the business of saving animal lives. We had no sanctuary and relied on volunteers and foster homes. Then, in 2003, our co-founder, Pamela Casey, purchased the SpayMart sanctuary in semi-rural Mississippi, and in 2012 donated this property to the organization. At last the animals had a place to call their very own. Times were bleak in those days and money was scarce, but the animals were grateful and never complained. Housing for staff consisted of a FEMA trailer and one partially renovated apartment. There were only 3 external pens and 7 internal pens. No administrative office or medical facilities existed.

A lot has happened since those humble beginnings. Today, there are 10 external pens and 12 internal, consisting of over 17,000 sq ft under roof. A fenced in play area allows our feline friends outside access with protection at the same time. The entire facility is centrally heated and cooled and equipped with a central vacuum system to expedite day to day cleaning. There is an administrative office and designated medical space. Two trailers and two apartments provide housing for necessary staff.

In November of 2015 alone, 14 abandoned animals made their way to the sanctuary, realizing it was their only hope. Homeless cats like Misty Blue, who was hit by a car at only four months of age, suffering a diaphramatic hernia and broken hip, unable to stand and left to die, was so grateful to come here and receive the care and love she desperately needed. And Remy, who at seven weeks of age was homeless at a trailer park in Slidell with a painful eye infection. After receiving the medical care he needed, it was his stay at the shelter that provided a new beginning. Jebediah was the victim of cruelty, trapped by an eight year old, and repeatedly shot in the eye with an air rifle. His healing process was lengthy, but the SpayMart shelter gave him the time and love he needed for a complete recovery. Many have come before Misty Blue, Remy and Jeb, and it is our sincere hope we will be able to offer the same refuge to all those who come in the future.

However, everything has a life expectancy and the same holds true for the sanctuary. There are necessary improvements that have been neglected and over looked as long as possible. Most stem from hurricane Katrina, including roof damage, gutters torn away, resulting in rotting of exterior siding. When the structure itself is in jeopardy, something must be done. As we celebrate SpayMart’s 18th anniversary this year, we would like to improve and upgrade much of the sanctuary’s oldest infrastructure: the behind-the-scenes amenities that visitors might not notice, but that play a vital role in the day to day care of the animals. These improvements will ensure that the homeless will always have a home. That is why I am writing to you today and giving you the opportunity to contribute to our Critical Needs List, and, by our estimate, completing everything on it would cost approximately $110,550.00. We have done our best with a bare bones staff and the money we had available to care for so many needing our help. But we can do much better. If every SpayMart supporter contributed $33.05 to the Shelter Improvement Fund, we would have the resources for all the needed items on our list. If you are fortunate enough to make a larger donation, or have a particular area of interest, please call us at 504-454-8200, or email at info@spaymart.org. The animals, particularly those that are not nearly so lucky as those belonging to each of you, are hoping you will make your most generous donation and fulfill our promise to the animals of a safe and loving shelter for years to come.

This is our chance to make sure the SpayMart shelter is strong enough to stand the test of time. So many animals depend on the shelter for their home-between-homes that changes their destiny. Thank you so much for making their dreams a reality.
