[New Orleans, La] – [Nov. 13, 2023] – SpayMart received a $45,000 grant from PetSmart Charities to help prepare more homeless pets in New Orleans for adoption. Some five million pets make their way into shelters each year in the U.S. With the help of this grant, the organization helped ease the impact of a veterinary shortage in animal shelters by offering pop-up spay/neuter clinics and sterilizing more than 1,000 pets.

One cat, Chiquita, came into a recent pop-up event to be spayed. The veterinary team observed she had a serious leg injury, requiring amputation. Freshly vetted and ready to be adopted, Chiquita found her new home before her stitches were out!

“The national shortage of veterinarians and technicians is hitting animal shelters and rescue organizations especially hard,” said SpayMart co-founder Lynne Chiche. “This grant from PetSmart Charities allowed us to address the bottleneck of spay/neuter surgeries and get the adoption pipeline flowing again. Making sure pets are spayed and neutered before adoption is incredibly important to stemming pet population, especially in areas like New Orleans that have kitten season year-round.”

“Chiquita represents so many others that need this vital preventative care,” said Heidi Marston, director of pet placement at PetSmart Charities. “Our friends at SpayMart make an incredible impact on pets, people and communities in New Orleans. The delivery of these services straight to where the need is highest makes the process so much more convenient for pet parents. We’re happy to support the important work they do.”
