[New Orleans, LA] – March 27, 2024 – SpayMart has received a $50,000 grant from PetSmart Charities® to help prepare more pets in the greater New Orleans area for adoption. Some four million pets find themselves in U.S. shelters each year.

Following the model of SpayMart’s very successful PetSmart-funded initiative in 2023, SpayMart will fill the void of available spay/neuter appointments for area shelters and rescues by providing bi-monthly “pop-up clinics” at the Louisiana SPCA and Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter.

These clinics will spay and neuter more than 1,000 cats and kittens in the community. All participating organizations will have opportunities to adopt their pets through PetSmart stores.

“Making sure pets are spayed and neutered before adoption is incredibly important to stemming pet population,” said Lynn Chiche, SpayMart president. “A national shortage of spay/neuter services has hit animal shelters hard, and this grant will help ease shelter crowding by keeping the adoption pipeline moving.”

“Shelters across the U.S. are struggling to keep pace with the number of animals coming in and need support from their communities to bring pets and people together,” said Heidi Marston, director of pet placement at PetSmart Charities. “We’re proud to support SpayMart and the essential work they do to care and advocate for the animals that come through their door in need of loving families. Please consider supporting their lifesaving work through volunteering, fostering, adopting, or by making a donation.”

PetSmart stores feature adoptable pets to meet and cuddle in spacious areas, and staff and volunteers are on-hand to make introductions and answer questions. Potential pet parents can also learn about the products and services they’ll need for the best possible start with their new family members. SpayMart’s Kitten Foster Program has cats and kittens for adoption at PetSmart at 1000 S Clearview Parkway in Elmwood.
