In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans learned firsthand the devastating impact natural disasters can have on both people and animals. Born out of that experience, SpayMart has been dedicated to helping pets and their owners weather storms of all kinds ever since. As hurricane season approaches, we want to share some essential tips to help you prepare and protect your four-legged family members.

1. Microchip and Update Your Pet’s Information

A microchip is a tiny identification device implanted under your pet’s skin that contains a unique number. This number is linked to your contact information in a national database. If your pet gets lost during a hurricane or evacuation, a microchip can be the key to reuniting you. Make sure your pet is microchipped and that your contact information in the registry is up-to-date.

2. Prepare a Pet Emergency Kit

Assemble a kit containing essential supplies for your pet in case of evacuation or extended power outages. Your pet’s emergency kit should include:

  • Food and water for at least a week
  • Medications and copies of medical records
  • Leashes, harnesses, and carriers
  • Bowls, litter, and litter box
  • First-aid kit
  • Familiar toys and bedding
  • Recent photos of your pet in case they become lost

3. Identify Pet-Friendly Evacuation Shelters

Not all shelters allow pets, so research and identify pet-friendly shelters in your area or nearby counties. Make arrangements for your pet’s stay well in advance, as spaces can fill up quickly.

4. Secure Your Home and Yard

If you’re not evacuating, ensure your home and yard are secure to protect your pets from escaping or getting injured. Bring all pets indoors and ensure windows and doors are tightly closed. Secure any loose objects in your yard that could become projectiles in high winds.

5. Evacuate Early if Necessary

If authorities advise evacuation, do not wait until the last minute. Leaving early will give you ample time to travel safely and secure a spot at a pet-friendly shelter. Never leave your pets behind!

6. Stay Informed

Monitor weather updates and pay attention to evacuation orders. Having a plan in place and being prepared will help you stay calm and focused on keeping your furry family members safe.

Remember:

  • Your pet relies on you for their safety and well-being during a hurricane.
  • Planning and preparation are crucial to ensure their safety and minimize stress for both of you.

Let’s work together to keep our pets safe this hurricane season!
