At SpayMart, we believe every cat deserves a chance, not just the ones who purr in our laps, but also the ones who watch from the shadows.

Every year, kitten season brings a tidal wave of tiny lives into our community, born under houses, behind dumpsters, in alleys and sheds. And as sweet and innocent as they are, kittens under five weeks of age are the most likely to die in shelters. They require constant care, feeding every few hours, and temperature regulation, and too many just don’t survive.

That’s why we believe in the power of TNR: Trap, Neuter, Return.

It’s more than just a strategy. It’s a promise that we will meet community cats where they are, respect their wildness, and prevent suffering before it starts.

Why “R” matters

Some people ask: Why not remove them entirely? But here’s the truth: if you remove unneutered cats from a location, nature fills the vacuum. New, unsterilized cats move in. The food supply, whether it’s scraps from a restaurant dumpster or kindhearted neighbors leaving kibble, supports larger litters and faster reproduction.

By returning spayed/neutered and vaccinated cats to their original territory, we’re not only preventing new litters — we’re creating a stable, non-breeding colony. These cats guard their turf without reproducing. It’s one of the few humane, evidence-based ways to reduce outdoor cat populations.

The other side of the coin: kittens

When kittens are young enough to be socialized, they can enter our Kitten Foster Program, where they receive around-the-clock care from experienced volunteers. But even with the best care, the odds can be heartbreaking. That’s why TNR and foster go hand in hand. We must stem the tide of kittens being born into a life of hunger, disease, and danger.

TNR works. And it works because of the people who do it: the trappers, feeders, and caretakers who spend their nights crawling under porches and braving storms, all to make life better for cats who may never let them close.
